Inspirational Quote
A real decision is measured by the fact that you've taken a new action. If there's no action, you haven't truly decided.

SITRUS UITVOER IN

WEEGSKAAL

Bonsmaras dominate at

Charlgrove Weaner Competition

– 29 April 2014
Bonsmaras Dominate Elizabeth Klopper
Competition was extremely tough at the recent annual Chargrove Weaner Calf Competition held at the Bathurst West Farmers Association sale pens near Kenton-on-Sea.The judge, Bruce Page, a well-known calf buyer from East London had his work cut out to pick the winners for the 2014 competition. The criteria for the competition, where calves must be in groups of at least 10 single sex calves are uniformity, potential, in a weight range of 160 – 260kg and preferably be dehorned and castrated.

The first prize of R7 000 sponsored by Hobson & Co and a R2 000 bull voucher from Goodwoods Bonsmaras for the Frontier Bonsmara Sale on 20 August 2014 was won by Elizabeth Klopper of Alexandria. Her winning group was a pen of 10 Bonsmara steers weighing 248kg which sold for R4 600 each.

Rod Nightingale, also from Alexandria was a very close second with his pen of 10 Bonsmara bulls which weighed 260kg and sold for R4 650 each. He won a R3 000 cash prize and a bull voucher of R2 000 to the Brakfontein Sale of JJ Park. John Ford, a regular previous winner was third. His pen of Bonsmara steers weighed 236kg and sold for 18.64/kg. All three prize winners plus many of the highly recommended groups of calves were Bonsmara or Bonsmara X cattle and were almost exclusively bred from Frontier Bonsmara bulls. Prize winners are also guest sellers at the Frontier auction where 200 commercial heifers are sold after the 60 bulls.

Mark Lake of Lake Farming in the Congokraal area set the slaughter stock sale alight with 27 Bonsmara oxen which sold for R9 700 each. He is a member of the Frontier Bonsmara group.

To cap of a great day for the Frontier Bonsmara group Justin Stirk of Goodwoods Bonsmaras was awarded the Prestigious Stud Book Stud Farmer of the Year award in Bloemfontein.

Hobson & Co were delighted with the auction where 810 cattle were sold, with calves selling for above market price and slaughter stock prices being extremely competitive.
