A real decision is measured by the fact that you've taken a new action. If there's no action, you haven't truly decided.

Droogte knel weer in die
Oos-Kaap

THE HOGSBACK ONE HUNDRED IS BACK !
On Saturday August 24th the Hofmeyer Endurance Club hosted the “new” Hogsback Inn Endurance Horse Ride – an official ERASA (Endurance Ride Association South Africa) event – which proved to be an amazing success.
Revived by popular demand after a “break “ of more than 15 years, The Hogsback Ride was hosted by the Hogsback Inn, who at very short notice, pulled out all the stops to make the event memorable for both competitors and spectators. The ride was organized in three weeks and was made possible by the enthusiasm and effort put in by Mark and Linda Andersen, owners of the Hogsback Inn. Organising a ride is a huge undertaking – a route has to be found, areas have to be laid out for the vetting, timekeeping, grooming areas and horse camps, and everyone has to be fed.
Endurance Horse Riding, although the least formal of all the competitive horse sports, is nonetheless rigidly controlled to ensure the maximum safety and wellbeing of the equine competitors who make up 50% of a competing team.
Before the ride, horses are inspected by a veterinarian to ensure that they are fit to take part.
The ride is divided into sections – legs, phases etc. After each leg, each competing horse is stopped and checked by the vet at what is sometimes called a “vetgate” – soundness, dehydration, respiration and heart rates are all checked – and only if the horse passes the fitness examination may the competing team – horse and rider – continue.
The Hogsback Inn 80km Endurance Ride comprised 3 “out and return” legs – all of which were ridden on the Saturday 24th – so if you were in Hogsback on the weekend of 24th, you would have come across the many horses and riders on the village highways and byways – in fact many Hogsback “Old Timers” were thrilled to once again hear the clop of passing horses hooves – saying how it took them back to the days when many in the Hogsback Village got around on their 4 legged steeds.
3 veterinarians Dr. Nicola Clayton from Grahamstown, Dr. Karl Hagemann from King Williams Town – who is becoming a more familiar face in Hogsback – and as Chief Vet – Dr. Thys Potgieter of Alexandria – were in attendance at the Hogsback Ride.
80km Competitors left the Hogsback Inn Race Village stabling grounds from 7.00am on Saturday to tackle the timed 80km cloverleaf course with 3 out and return legs.
Novices and Day Riders doing the 40km route departed from 7.30am. The Hogsback local police – with thanks to Capt. Ferreira – and designated ride marshals, kept an eye on the traffic and made sure that all flowed smoothly.
Competitors reported that it was a tough and challenging course, but the beautiful natural surroundings of Hogsback made the ride so enjoyable, that they all intended to return for the next one.
The Hofmeyer Endurance Club wants to make the 2014 Hogsback Inn Endurance Ride a 100 Miler following on in the tradition of the original Hogsback One Hundred and are looking forward to it becoming one of the most popular rides in South Africa.
And Just for the Record – The original Hogsback 100miler took place by the light of a full moon.
Horse Rider Teams left from the Stutterheim Caravan Park at midnight and rode to Keiskammahoek, on past Sandile Dam and up Wolfridge Road to a stop/rest point at Madonna and Child.
From there they carried on through the Hogsback Village up to the T-junction, and rode along the Happy Valley Road through Die Gang to Thomas River, and then came down over the ridge through the Kubussi Forest to finish back at the Stutterheim Caravan Park. The Cyclists left a bit later – at 2.00 am – so as not to scare the horses.
We had 35 entries for this first ride, it proved to be a really tough course for both horse and rider. Ride results are as follows:
Lightweight Division

  • 1st – Lorraine Botha on Milagro Sham Lee in a time of 6:28:14

Standard Weight Division

  • 1st – Cindy Naude on Johrhemar Morhaf IBN Shakkarr in a time of 4:53:51. Cindy was the overall winner of the 80km and completed this difficult course at an average speed of 16.74 km per hour, very impressive.
  • 2nd – Harry Hobson on Blakeridge Tornado in a time of 5:19:23

Heavyweight Division

  • 1st – Danny Muller on Nabeehah Plato in a time of 4.53:54
  • 2nd – Andrew Jordaan on Lormar de Vos in a time of 6:21:13

Best Conditioned Horse

  • 1st – Harry Hobson on Blakeridge Tornado

A mention must be made of two local Hogsback riders who both finished their first endurance rides. Quentin Luck on Melody completed 40km in a time of 3:15:04 and Jennifer Whyle on Forest Bear finished 20km in a time of 2:02:21 – well done to both these riders!
Wesley Hayes, organizer of this ride, commented “the ride was a wonderful success and thank you once again to the Hogsback Inn for the use and enjoyment of their facilities”.
Endurance riding is a real “family” sport and tremendous camaraderie is shown between the riders. The welfare of the horse is the first priority, the motto of endurance riding is “To Finish is To Win”. And of course there is a party after the ride ………the joint was jumping at the wild boar spit braai held under the stars in the Race Village.
