Inspirational Quote
A real decision is measured by the fact that you've taken a new action. If there's no action, you haven't truly decided.

Amakhala Emoyeni

Wind Farm Launched

It was a ‘green’ event, but orange was the dominant colour on 1 August when ‘clean energy’ company Cennergie held a symbolic sod-turning ceremony to commence construction at the new Amakhala Emoyeni Windfarm project between Bedford and Cookhouse. A total of 56 Nordex turbines should be ready to roll at the site within the next two years time.
The name “Amakhala Emoyeni” means “aloes in the wind” and was chosen by Windlab, the original developer.
Orange is the theme-colour for the project and guests and VIPs all wore orange reflective safety vests and carried orange Cennergie umbrellas. The throng made an eye-catching show out at the site on a wind-swept expanse of dry veld. It seemed to be the middle of nowhere last week, but it will not remain that way for long.
Cennergie was started by two major players in the energy business: Exxaro and Tata Power. High-ranking representa-tive from both companies attended the ceremony as well as key people from Windlab.
Nordex was also well-represented – this German-based company will make the wind turbines and do the construction. Their staff members are already familiar faces round Bedford and they will be in our area for 12 years – completing a 10-year maintenance contract after the initial two-year construction period.
Thomas Garner, the CEO of Cennergie, said: “For me the biggest spin-offs of our Amakhala Emoyeni project (besides the cheap, competitive and clean energy) is that the programme was set up to have impact on its surrounding communities. The skills development, job creation and engineering education and training that are taking place are spin-offs of the programme that will snowball in the years to come.”
After the ceremony and speeches, the entire group repaired to the Bedford club for several interesting presentations and a terrific buffet lunch. A sizeable contingent of community and council members (including the Nxuba mayoress) joined the party at this point.
