Six Teachers approved for
617 PE District Vacancies

Just six temporary teachers have so far had their contracts renewed by the Eastern Cape Education Department for the entire Port Elizabeth education district.
This is despite the PE district being the province’s largest, with 617 vacant teaching posts. The number of vacancies is made worse by the fact that SADTU is blocking the re-assignment of 239 teachers who are in excess at their current schools.
According to an internal departmental document dated 9 January 2013, PE district had the lowest number of temporary teaching posts (6) approved for the period January to March.
This means that 382 teachers whose contracts expired on 31 December 2012 are in danger of losing their jobs when schools start.
In a December 9th memo to districts, the department indicated that no further teachers will be appointed until the 239 excess teachers are moved to new posts. This type of approach pushes children into the crossfire between unions and the department and the Democratic Alliance condemns it in the strongest terms.
The DA demands to know whether the department intends to send children back to school to stare at empty classrooms?
Do PE district officials not have the capacity to register teachers’ applications for their contracts to be extended? Or are they simply willing to allow all these educators to be dumped out of the system?
The PE district was where the biggest community protests were held last year about the lack of teachers.
Despite this, smaller education districts will have higher numbers of temporary teachers returning to work, such as Libode (288) and Uitenhage (214).
If this situation remains, the bubble around the department’s “year of action” in education will not only burst, it will explode.
The DA calls on communities to make their voices heard by reporting all shortages of teachers at their children’s schools to the Education Department.
Sufficient temporary teachers must be appointed and the re-assignment of excess teachers must be dealt with as a separate issue.
Only through sustained pressure will this Education Department realise the importance of our children’s education.

Every learner has a right to quality teaching and learning according to SASA and the South African Constitution. Currently, this right of learners is either disregarded or learners are just derived from this right.
It is since 2006 that the abovementioned school is battling with teacher shortages. The school has managed to somehow cope by appointing School Governing Body teachers. However, teacher shortages have become a major concern in recent years. In 2010/2011/2012 and the beginning of 2013, these shortages became an uncontrollable phenomenon, impacting St. Teresa’s as follows:
* The learner progress is significantly impacted negatively, because of the failure of the DoE to provide adequate teachers.
* The discipline of the learners has significantly deteriorated.
* Social and economic degrading because of undisciplined learners
* Financial resources of the school are exhausted
* The teacher morale is impacted negatively.
* Severe pressure is put on parents to contribute financially, when it comes to fundraising.
At present (2013), seven classes don’t have teachers, four of these classes are foundation phase classes, two are grade four classes and one teacher is needed for learning areas in Intersen, there is no secretary.
Undoubtedly, this is not a normal situation for any institution.
We have engaged the DoE on numerous occasions, via letters, faxes, etc, without a positive response. Unfortunately we as the SGB of St. Teresa’s have exhausted all efforts to get a positive response from the DoE.
If the following demands are not met:
1. provision of seven teachers for the classes without teachers
2. appointment of secretary
The SGB has no alternative, but to consider the following:
1. Closing the school gates, picketing and inviting the media – no school for learners
2. Engaging head office and the MEC
3. If necessary, engaging national DoE
4. The President
5. The media will be prevalent in these engagements

Linden von Hoesslin, die nuut aangestelde skoolhoof van Laerskool Cradock.
Laerskool Cradock se nuwe skoolhoof het gister diens aanvaar. Hy is Linden von Hoesslin (61) wat aangestel is in die plek van Wimpie van der Merwe wat verlede jaar tragies in ‘n busongeluk gesterf het.
Van Hoesslin, ‘n Suid Afrikaner wat vir die afgelope 15 jaar in Thailand en die Golfstate (Gulf States) gewoon en gewerk het, is ‘n oudstudent van die voormalige Graaff-Reinet Opleidingskollege, het in Oos Londen skoolgegaan en verder studeer aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad en ‘n universiteit in Amerika.
Hy sê hy het Cradock toe gekom oor hy die platteland verkies en was voor sy verblyf in die buiteland, onder meer skoolhoof by drie laerskole en ‘n hoërskool in Oos Londen en ook in die Noordkaap. Hy was daarna in Thailand hoof van die tweede grootste skool in die wêreld met 6000 leerlinge en ook hoof van twee verskillende hoër en laerskole in die gebied van die Sultan van Oman.
“Ek was bevoorreg om gedurende daardie tyd wêreld skolekonferensies by te woon en ek wil graag al die kennis wat ek opgedoen het, nou in Laerskool Cradock inploeg. Suid Afrika se natuurskoon en buitelewe, my familie, my strandhuis in Oos Londen en die feit dat ek vrylik my godsdiens hier kan uitleef, het my teruggeroep na die land van my geboorte,” het hy gesê.
Van Hoesslin sê hy mik daarna om ‘n eweredige balans tussen akademie en fisiese- en emosionele vaardighede asook buitelug opvoeding by Cradock se leerlinge in te skerp. Hy rig graag swem, rugby, hokkie, atletiek en muurbal af en is fanaties oor die Oos Kaap se natuurlewe, is ‘n ywerige viertrek fietsryer (quad bike), ry graag bergfiets en is versot op kanovaart en “boogie boarding”.
