Kim brings Chelsea gold to Bedford
How does it feel to help plant 10 500 plants in ten days and be part of the Chelsea team that wins two international awards for their efforts?
Kim van Niekerk shared the magic of this experience in words and pictures during the Bedford Garden Club meeting last week.
She worked for 20 back-breaking days as a volunteer on a show-garden titled ”Quiet Time: Forbidden Garden DMZ” – brainchild of Korean artist Jihae Hwang.
Jihae is one of the hottest young names on the international garden design scene and this was her first ever Chelsea Show garden.
In spite of being completely outside the general expected style at Chelsea, “Quiet Time” was awarded not only a gold medal but also the coveted RHS President’s Award.
A woodland garden, it encapsulated the miracle of a no-go demilitarised zone in mid-Korea where plants and small animals have flourished in isolation for 60 years. The area has now become a botanical sanctuary.
When Chelsea opened, the garden looked as though it had been growing in London for 60 years! Complete with moss-covered logs, masses of leaf-mould and a gentle stream.
“Quiet Time” resonated with memories of divided families, broken dreams and lost lives (including those of British soldiers who also fought in the Korean War).
But nature’s healing power was the over-riding message.
Apart from the life-changing experience of working with rare plants (many flown in from Korea) and expert designers and plants-people, Kim rubbed shoulders with the royalty of the gardening world and international gardening media. (She told them all about the Bedford Garden Festival – 26 to 28 October 2012.
Accidentally, she was in the right place to meet several real Royals as well. Her favourite: Princess Anne – because she seemed so interested, friendly and down-to-earth.
As a volunteer planter at the Chelsea Flower Show, Kim van Niekerk made friends with next-stall-neighbour Diarmuid Gavin – seen here with Kim and Korean designer Jihae Hwang.

IS U TEVREDE MET DIE
WAARDASIE VAN U EIENDOM?
BLUE CRANE GEBIED
Oral tree daar verhogings in.

KOM KUIER BY DIE
BILTONGFEES
SOMERSET-OOS

The Castle Lager SuperFans Competition as well as the Biltong Festival Mountain Bike Ride are just some of the fun activities festivalgoers can take part in at the 22nd Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival on the 13th – 14th July 2012.
All sports fans and biltong-lovers can come together and show their support for our national teams and Castle Lager at the 2012 Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival, by participating in the Castle Lager SuperFans Competition, which will be taking place on Saturday, 14 July.
Visit the Castle Lager Beer Tent during this year’s Festival at the Somerset East Show Grounds for a refreshing Castle Lager, dressed in sporting regalia that illustrates how passionate you, your friends and family are about South African sport and Castle Lager. Look for a Castle Lager representative and he/she will take down your details to be entered into the Competition. The best dressed group or person stands a chance to win: Four tickets to any Currie Cup rugby match of his/her choice held in Port Elizabeth, as well as a case of Castle Lager and Castle Lager memorabilia. The winners will be announced after the Super 15 Bulls vs. Lions rugby game from the Castle Lager Gig Rig. The competition is open to persons 18 and older.
The Biltong Festival Mountain Bike Ride, however, is a refreshing activity for the whole family to enjoy. Also taking place on the 14th July, the 45km ride happens in the surrounding area of Somerset East and some new, never ridden before single tracks have been included for this year’s ride. The ride will start at 09:30am at the Hub near the Somerset East Golf Course and costs R80, which includes refreshments at the end. One water point will be provided for as well as kiddies’ rides and babysitting at R50 per child. Registration for the ride will open from 08:00am – all ages are welcome.
