Sean Murphy and Debbie MuirFAMILY OF MAGISTRATES

ADELAIDE

Adelaide resident Magistrate Sean Murphy has recently been joined on the bench by his daughter, Debbie Muir, also of Adelaide. After completion of her Law degree in 2004, Debbie trained and was admitted as an Attorney. Thereafter, she and her husband Michael lived in the UK for a few years during which time she was admitted as a Solicitor. After their return to South Africa, Debbie joined a local firm of attorneys. When the opportunity presented itself in early 2014, she accepted a post as Acting Magistrate, initially in Cradock, and most recently in Grahamstown. The Murphys have a family history as magistrates. In addition to her father, Sean, who has been on the bench for 30 years, Debbie’s great grandfather Josias De Witt and great uncle Steve De Witt were both magistrates. Josias De Witt was initially stationed at Matatiele in the Old Transkei in the early 1900s and later at Molteno and Somerset East. Debbie is proud to be following in the family tradition.

SA Post Office perspective on the rebalancing of retail branch network

Some factual in-accuracies have circled media reports regarding the rebalancing of the SA Post Office’s retail branch network.

The Administration Team wishes to place it on record that the closing of SA Post Office branches as a result of the current retail network re-balancing exercise is a legacy issue that we found at the SA Post Office when we were appointed in November 2014. It was part of the SA Post Office’s normal business efficiencies practices that was underway long before our appointment. (The history of this re-balancing exercise is shown in the tables below).

The practice of business to consider efficiencies from all perspectives is embedded in the models of all revenue-generating businesses. To the SA Post Office’s credit, this exercise has been practiced variously in many areas of our business, including in so far as the rebalancing of its retail network is concerned.
