A real decision is measured by the fact that you've taken a new action. If there's no action, you haven't truly decided.

DA-by-riool

CRADOCK SE rioolprobleme

WILNA DE KLERK

CRADOCK

BIG HEARTS BEHIND THE 2015

PINK TREES FOR PAULINE

PRESTIGIOUS VALLEI TOT VALLEI

CYCLE TOUR

What does it take for someone to cycle hundreds of kilometres in 4 days in support of people they do not know? Mignon McLaughlin said “People are made of flesh and blood and a miracle fibre called courage.” The 18 cyclists who took part in the Pink Trees for Pauline Vallei tot Vallei Cycle Tour 2015 are clearly men and women of courage. The cyclists committed themselves to the event by paying their entry fee to cover the bulk of their own costs. When they climbed on their bicycles on 20 September 2015 in Wilderness to start this 529km tour they knew one thing for sure, business leaders with the hearts of lions had their backs!

The unique route of the Pink Trees for Pauline Vallei tot Vallei Cycle Tour 2015 started in Wilderness in the Garden Route and ended in Franschhoek in the Cape Wine lands District. The aim of this first of its kind cycle tour was to raise awareness for Pink Trees for Pauline and the needs of the cancer communities of South Africa. When Lynn Schroeder Motors from George heard that there was a need for support vehicles they committed to supply a BMW motorcycle and BMW vehicles for the duration of the tour. To show their utmost support to the cancer communities of South Africa, Raymond Botha, Dealer Principal of Lynn Schroeder Motors confirmed that he will be riding the BMW motorcycle which will also transport the camera man Dewald de Kock. The support given by Lynn Schroeder Motors comes as no surprise as it has been their mission, from the moment they opened their doors in 1992, to develop their business around the needs of their customers.

Jakes Jacobs, together with wife Leoni and daughter Leani, leave no stone unturned when it comes to supporting those in need. It was with no shortage of vigour that Jakes pledged his company, Outeniqua Plastics’ support to the Pink Trees for Pauline Vallei tot Vallei Cycle Tour. Outeniqua Plastics threw its weight in and made sure that the cycle tour was a success from the start. As quality control and planning is at the core of this business, Outeniqua Plastics played a valuable role in this prestigious event.

Protea Hotels was one of the major sponsors of Pink Trees for Pauline during the 2014 project. The Pink Trees for Pauline Vallei tot Vallei Cycle Tour had substantial backing from the hotel group during this year’s tour. Protea Hotels strive to be a light to our communities and help to make a positive impact wherever their hotels are found. Although the needs in our beloved continent are great it is Protea Hotels’ belief that by being intentional about caring for those marginalised by society we can help reflect the beauty of life.

Without the unfailing support of sponsors no event can be finished in excellence. The 529km route through Wilderness, Mosselbay, Riversdale, Barrydale, Montagu, Worcester, Ceres, Paarl and Franschhoek was conquered in excellence by 18 brave cyclists. They cycled focussed only on the road ahead because they knew that they had the best support team with them and dedicated sponsors throughout South Africa.

RHODES STOEPSITFEES –

11, 12 & 13 FEBRUARIE 2016

This will be the fourth Stoepsitfees since the first one was held in 2013. Apart from the delights of Stoepsitting, which include fascinating conversation, tasty local snacks, and the development of new friendships, a productive pastime unites the participants on the stoeps and under shady trees in the quiet roads of the village.

All the attendants with an interest in knitting, whether experts or beginners, knit 20cm squares from the gaily coloured yarns provided by Saprotex International. These are sewn into blankets which will be put up for auction at the Rhodes-based Epson Wild Trout Fly Fishing Festival in March 2016. The proceeds are then used to buy blankets that are given to the needy in the adjoining Zakhele Township.

Bookings for accommodation have already been made by folk from the United Kingdom who will be participating with several of their South African friends. Similar friendships are formed each year, as conversation, is often the main focus at each house. International visitors love the quiet atmosphere of Rhodes, with its constant bird calls, and interesting local human population.

The wide variety of stoeps in Rhodes will be open to all participants, with demonstrations and sampling ranging from pottery at the Clay Café, etchings and paintings at the Rhodes Gallery, to the Cheese factory and Brewery at Earlstown.

Woolworks is a group of local ladies who spin and knit the wool from sheep on the farms of the area. They produce a wide variety of garments and toys for all occasions.

Although knitting is an important aspect of the event, there are also other activities that may be of interest such as joining groups led by experts to see the rich indigenous flora on the mountains surrounding Rhodes, or picnic and swim in the river. Fly fishing for indigenous wild yellowfish as well as rainbow trout can be enjoyed on more than 200km of running water within an hour’s drive of Rhodes. The newly established River Park on Main Street has a 3 hole chip and putting circuit for golfing enthusiasts to hone their skills on the banks of the Bell River. The greens will be open for the 2017 Stoepsitfees to allow the grass cover sufficient time to become completely established. In the meantime, a great place to sit in the shade of the trees and admire the view or pop-in next door to the River Market’s veggie garden.
