Rickeen Martins awarded Dr Alan Russell Scholarship with Trustee Lynne Brown.
SOMERSET EAST
The following article appeared in the Globe and Mail in Canada recently. It is Canada’s biggest newspaper and distributed throughout Canada.
Journalist, Paul Waldie, runs a Giving Back column every week to give various charities some exposure. He wrote the following:
“When Alan Russell’s daughter Anna headed to Durban, South Africa in the early 1980s to work on women’s rights issues, he decided to pay her a visit.
Dr. Russel knew little of the country and didn’t know what to expect. “I went out to visit her and I found it really fascinating and saddening,” he said from his office in Brampton, Ontario, where he specializes in pain management.
He was struck by the poverty, lack of educational opportunity, rampant AIDS and malnutrition. When he returned to Canada, Dr. Russell began writing about what he saw and the plight of people in South Africa.
Eventually his interest in the country led him to Lynne Brown, a former school teacher in Somerset East, a small city 180 kilometers north of Port Elizabeth. The community has high unemployment, hundreds of AIDS orphans and crushing poverty.
“Lynn said to me, ‘Instead of writing, why don’t you do something?’” Dr. Russell recalled. In 2008, he and his wife, Lucie, visited Ms. Brown and they began making plans to set up a charity to address local issues.
That led to the creation of the Siyakhulisa Abantwana Foundation, which means “We are nurturing the children.”
The charity works on a simple structure. Ms. Brown identifies a local need and Dr. Russel raises money in Canada to find a solution. Most of the financing involves scholarships and the contributions have been as little as $150 to help student finish the final year of a programme or $100 to cover a student’s transportation costs. The foundation has also funded school supplies and programmes at a foster home.
“Lynne can ring me and say, ‘We’ve got a problem, somebody can’t do this or that.’ and we can deal with it instantly,” said Dr. Russell, who has raised $30,000 so far with another $10,000 pledged.
“It’s psychotherapy from the world we live in,” he added. “It’s psychotherapy for me in the sense that we are doing a little bit of good.”
At the moment the Siyakhulisa Trust is committed to sponsoring 6 learners to attend Gill College from Grades 8 – 12. Of the four that started in Grade 8 this year one unfortunately dropped out. However three new learners will join the other three next year.

Veediefstal neem drasties toe
CRADOCK

NEW VENUE FOR BEDFORD FESTIVAL
Nyarha Park (the eye-catching new Bedford precinct) will be a hive of activity on Saturday 27 October (during the Garden Festival).
All festival events during the day are free. They include a worm-farming workshop by the fundis from Stutterheim, a display of Envirofurn recycled furniture from Grahamstown, two repeats of an entertaining “green” performance, and info displays on waste recycling and greening in Bedford’s Nyarha townships.
Nyarha Park is on the R63 to Adelaide, just over the river from Eagle Hout.
The huge aloe leaf on the roof of the main structure is an unmistakeable landmark.
The complex is one of four parks with buildings created by EC Nxuba LM Greening and Beautification Project, funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs Extended Public Works Programme. The hard landscaping and buildings were designed by Frans Mulder and the green landscaping (propagation nursery and planting of indigenous and food plants) by Kim’s Green Gardens. There are two parks in Bedford and two in Adelaide.

Op die foto verskyn Graham Putter en Dakes Degenaar
‘n Mooi Karoo-storie
