SOMERSET EAST
Water problems for Cookhouse seems to be something of the past!! A bulk water contract to supply bulk water to the town of Cookhouse from the canal at Uitkeer was completed recently. The project which was initiated in 2009 and was done by consulting engineers, Water and Pumping Solutions, and constructed by Manlambo Construction. The total value of the contract was approximately R8million. According to Nell Potgieter, of Water and Pumping Solutions, phase 1 of the Cookhouse Bulk Water Supply contract consisted of approximately 3.8 kms of new PVC pipeline from the farm “Orchards” to the end of the Bosberg canal, upgrading of the in and outlet structures as well as refurbishment of approximately 9kms of existing SAR pipelines from the canal offtake near Uitkeer to the farm “Orchards”.
Phase 2 of the contract will consist of the replacing of the SAR pipeline with PVC pipes as soon as funding comes available. Local labour and local SMME’s were used on the contract, comprising of 5 adult men, 2 adult women, 25 youth men and 3 youth women. A total of 35 local jobs were created over the duration of the contract. According to Nell Potgieter, they were very impressed with the quality of work the SMME’s and the labourers have done and the professional way that the contractor, Mamlambo Construction, has handled the contract. The total income of these 35 local jobs amounted to approximately R340 000,00. Funding for the project originated from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant Funding.
